Valerie Cox, operations manager at Smart Mart on Route 66, Portland, leans on the parking meter that has drawn more than $400 in donations from customers since February to benefit Mary-Jo Maruschock, seated to left, and her husband, Frank. Cox began the benefit for Mary-Jo, who suffers from ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, after receiving word from the Portland Visiting Nurses Association of her need. Smart Mart owner Kevin Danby began the benefit with a personal donation of $100. The meter remains parked right next to the store’s cash register.
